Well, as some of you probably know, I've been using Reaper for all my audio submissions. This resulted in lots of time spent recording, and re-recording parts, then doing edits. My old style consisted of determining a key I would like to play in, then improvising in that key. I'd do this for a few days, playing around each time. Eventually I sort of slip into a melody I like, and then I do a recording from there.

Basically, it was recording an improv session, then editing out parts that I didn't like, and cutting and pasting parts together. While I liked the degree of freedom, it was very annoying to have to listen to something I had previously recorded to determine the tempo.

I've been playing with Fruity Loops for a while. Started with it at first, from recommendations in the audio forum, but all the tutorial links were outdated and dead. After that, I just went straight to REAPER and never looked back. Today, on a rather slow day, I thought, "why not give it another shot?". I was always aware that FL ran mostly on patterns, but till today, I never found the playlist section, and without that, I never found a way to get my patterns into a song.

Having "discovered" FL, I think it's time to close off REAPER for a bit, and move on to FL. I'll probably still go back, but for now I think I'll try this method of composing instead. Hope it works out!
